Drawing from her rich Polynesian and Amazigh heritage, Mel'Keta brings a unique cultural perspective to her artistry as a professional belly dancer, instructor, and choreographer. Her journey through dance began with the rhythms of the South Pacific Islands, creating a natural bridge to her current mastery of both Middle Eastern dance and Tahitian movement traditions.
A lifelong student of dance, Mel'Keta's foundation includes extensive training in ballet, modern, jazz, and ballroom. In 2006, she deepened her commitment to Middle Eastern dance (Raqs Sharqi) through intensive study with renowned instructors Zarouhi Otchy and Tashira Awadiya. Her dedication to the art form has led her to train with internationally acclaimed artists, including Elena Lentini and Samara—protégés of the legendary Ibrahim Farrah—as well as the celebrated Ansuya.
From her origins in New Jersey to her current home in Tennessee, Mel'Keta has graced stages throughout the Northeast, Midwest, and internationally. Her performance and teaching career includes prestigious appearances at the Celebrating Dance Festival UK and organizing the acclaimed Sultanas Dinner Showcase series. As founder of the Drummer-Dancer Musicality Workshop intensive series and co-director of Cobra Raqs Nashville, she continues to elevate the art form through innovative educational initiatives.
Mel'Keta's commitment to cultural preservation and education extends beyond performance. She serves as a member of the White House Community Initiative of the Arts (CIA) and directs the Heritage Around the World (HAW) Youth Troupe, introducing young people to diverse cultural traditions. Her expertise has been recognized through features in Nashville Voyager Magazine's Local Artist Spotlight and The Bash's Top Nashville Artist profiles, as well as her educational interview with NECAT on "The Art of Raqs Sharqi: Understanding and Making the Difference."
As both an entrepreneur and artist, she combines her dual degrees in Accounting with her passion for dance and costume design, bringing meticulous attention to detail to every aspect of her craft. This multifaceted approach has led to her success as a Belly Dance Fitness Instructor at The Y of Springfield, TN, and as a co-founding member of the Cool Girls Create Network. Her newest venture, curating immersive dance tours to Egypt, offers students and enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the art form in its cultural homeland.
Whether performing or teaching, Mel'Keta creates an environment of joy and discovery. She lives by the words of dance pioneer Ted Shawn: "Dance is the only art wherein we ourselves are the stuff it's made of." This philosophy infuses her teaching style, performances, and choreography, creating transformative experiences that resonate deeply with both students and audiences alike.
